Poppers

aka: liquid gold, amyl nitrate, rush, locker room, ram, trust, TNT, rock hard, butyl nitrate

What are they?

Poppers are small bottles of alkyl or amyl nitrites. The chemical smells like pear drops and is sniffed from the bottle. It is often sold in sex shops, as it is said to enhance sexual pleasure. They are used for people suffering from chest pains, as amyl nitrate dilates blood vessels and allows more blood to get to the heart.

What are the effects?

  • When you take a big sniff, the effects are instant and fade after a couple of minutes.
  • You get a head rush.
  • Sniffing during sex is said to make orgasms last longer.
  • Can make you feel light headed.
  • It can give you a massive headache.
  • Some people can get a rash around their mouths.
  • Poppers act as a muscle relaxant.

What are the risks?

  • Poppers are toxic and can kill you if you swallow them.
  • Don’t get it on your skin, or it will burn.
  • If you have a bad heart, it is dangerous to sniff poppers.
  • It is also highly flammable, so be careful if you are smoking.

How much does it cost?

A bottle of poppers costs about £2 - £5.
